Leprosy Care Shanti Sewa Griha – Kathmandu, Nepal In 2005 Dr Michaela Gloeckler was asked to bring anthroposophic medicine to Shanti Sewa Griha, (Shanti) a leprosy rehabilitation centre in Kathmandu, Nepal. Co-founders of Shanti were attending an IPMT in India and felt very strongly that something could be brought to the residents of Shanti. The focus was on the issue of nerve regeneration for those who have had leprosy, have been treated by allopathic medicine, and are left with residual anaesthetised limbs, to varying degrees. As an initial humanitarian project, a group of residents in Shanti were chosen to be on a medication regime for a certain period of time. Muscular and nerve assessments were needed. A medical team was developed to work on this to see, could a specific medication programme reverse some of the nerve damage. Thanks to the support of the local staff, the medication regime has been maintained. Funding is now required to continue this programme for a further period of time. The project continues with the support of Wala, Weleda and the Ita Wegman Clinic, and is directed by the Medical Section at the Goetheanum. We ask for funding support from you to help continue the care programme. Please contact Stefan Langhammer for more information.
